Donald Ross, the designer of our Carolina Course, is considered the most prolific golf course architect in history. Designing and overseeing the construction of more than 400 golf courses throughout the US, his creative genius gave him a reputation for creating great golf courses that were a test for all abilities.

Ross's clear vision for how the game should be played called for the golfer to have a balanced attack. "No proficient skill should make up for deficiencies in the golfer's game."

His goal was to "force a man to use judgment and to exercise mental control in making the correct shot." As such, his measurement of a good golf course demanded "...accurate tee shots, accurate iron play, precise handling of the short game and consistent putting."

In the early 1920's the dairy farm which occupied the current property was sold to Mr. Jim Long.  It was the combination of Jim long's vision and Donald Ross' legendery genius which turned a cow pasture into the "Gem of Western North Carolina", opening in 1926 as the Waynesville Country Club.

Waynesville had already established itself as a premiere mountain resort destination and mecca for artisan shopping, allowing the WCC to become an instant success.  And since that time, many groups and individuals return annually to the club to enjoy the Smoky Mountain tranquility and the friendly hospitality of our great staff.

Over the years the WCC has hosted many well known figures, among them - Sam Snead, Chi-Chi Rodriguez, Arnold Palmer, Billy Graham, and President Richard Nixon.  Our "Tradition of Excellence" has allowed us to hold our head high as the powerhouse courses of the North Carolina lowlands have developed.  Today that proud tradition continues after more than 80 years as we strive to be your "Mountain Home Away from Home".
